Our Programs
NBCF bridges the gap between public education and the very special needs of blind and visually impaired children. The Programs sponsored by NBCF are as follows:
Parent Meetings
These meetings are held every other month and parents are encouraged to bring the whole family. A topic or an event is selected to encourage, educate and allow families to socialize. Parents will soon find that they are not alone. They will see older children, successful blind students, and begin to dream again for their child. At the same there is a specialist working with young children in our sensory play room and older children can play blind specific games.
After School Tutoring
After-school sessions are held on Wednesdays and by appointment to assist students with blind specific skills, homework assistance, Braille literacy and socialization. These are the skills necessary to compete in a sighted world. A book club is held to encourage reading and comprehension.
Blind Specific Technology Assistance
Blind students are dependent on technology – blind specific technology is not easily obtained nor maintained. NBCF has the resources and knowledge to provide this very important service using high tech, state of the art blind specific equipment and software.
Blind Specific Physical Activities
We provide blind specific sports events to help keep blind children active. They are so often left out of sports activities due to their blindness. Here we provide them with activities such as Showdown (blind specific table tennis), yoga, goal ball, beep ball, running and tandem biking.
Special Events
NBCF offers several special events during the course of the year including: Discovery Day Camp, Beep Baseball, Beepin’ Egg Hunt, and a Holiday Party.
Resource and Braille Library
NBCF houses the only braille library in the State of Nevada where families can borrow a Braille book, story box, electronic Braille or audible books. It is truly a full service “braille” library.
