a chance to graduate

Jamie Esparza

I was born with Cataracts. Having low vision has caused many problems in my life. It has especially led to problems in school. In many ways, school is challenging for visually impaired students like me.

In the past two years many things have happened. At the end of eighth grade I remember telling my mom I wanted to go to my home school. I told her that I wanted to go to regular education classes. Things didn’t go as I wanted them to go. Freshman year I went to Western HS. At Western there is a Visually Impaired program. The technology was not up to date. I also wasn’t getting the tools that I needed so we decided to go to my home school for 10th grade.

My mom and I knew I would need help adjusting so we turned to Mrs. White. Mrs. White suggested that I visit Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation once a week. At NBCF, I learned many things about technology, hobbies and about myself. The students and adults at NBCF helped me understand that I am very capable of learning; just because I am low vision doesn’t mean I can’t learn.

For the first time in my life I am taking regular education classes and have a chance to graduate because of NBCF. To me NBCF is a place where children with visual impairments or blindness can help each other; for example, Niki teaches me how to use technology, in return, I help organize fundraising events. Organizing the events make me feel accomplished.

At NBCF I’ve not only made good friends, but I’ve met people who are willing to help me and want me to learn. I enjoy going to NBCF and I am thankful for all the help I receive.
